A group of local artists will sell their artwork Friday and Saturday to raise money for relief efforts in Haiti and Chile, countries ravaged by recent earthquakes.
Project Art Aid was founded about two months ago by three Latino artists – Rosalia Torres-Weiner and Claudia Pureco, originally from Mexico, and Dulce Tavares, from Brazil – who felt a need to help the earthquake victims, Pureco said.
They hit upon the idea of exhibiting and selling artwork inspired by the disasters and donate the proceeds to the American Red Cross’ earthquake relief funds. An exhibit last month at Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte raised about $2,200, but this weekend’s exhibit will be the group’s first in a gallery – the Shain Gallery on Selwyn Avenue in Myers Park.
Project Art Aid’s roster of artists has expanded from the three founders to 17, all of whom will have paintings, watercolors, photographs and other pieces of art available for viewing and sale at prices ranging from $200 to $900 each. The Latin American Women’s Association is co-hosting with Project Art Aid (Pureco serves on LAWA’s board). Admission is free.
“It’s a reaction by artists to what happens in the world,” Pureco said, “and how we as artists can help out.”

Here are stories that caught our eye this week:
1. An extreme home makeover for Charlotte residents has been approved.
2. Bicycle safety and recreation are not top concerns as two parks and recreation projects in south Charlotte are cut from and their funding reallocated to projects in University City.
3. Danny Jarrett gave up his dream to be millionaire to teach kids. It’s paid off handsomely, as Jarrett is named The Charlotte Post's Teacher of the Year.
