During my Paid to Party days, Cinco de Mayo was one of my favorite holidays. I remember rolling from one restaurant to another watching people slamming beers and margaritas. Those were good times, but the Latin American Coalition created a different type of Cinco celebration.

On Sunday, thousands of people celebrated the Mexican holiday at the Cinco de Mayo Fanta Festival at McAlpine Creek Park. This is the third annual celebration, which is smaller than the Latin American Coalition’s Latin American Festival.

The event highlighted a mix of Hispanic and Latin American culture, and drew a diverse crowd. The event featured two stages with performances by established bands as well as other shows that encouraged audience participation.

The YWCA kicked off its Stand Against Racism Day with a small, but passionate gathering. Mayor Anthony Foxx, Community Relations director Willie Ratchford and Mecklenburg Ministries executive director Maria Hanlin were keynote speakers during the April 30 event. Crossroads Charlotte executive director Patricia Zoder and Charlotte Police chief Rodney Monroe were among the dozens of participants.

YWCA executive Kirsten Sikkelee said YWCA is recognized mostly for its efforts to empower women, but the organization has long been committed to fighting racism. Each of the speakers emphasized the importance individuals standing up to fight racism and promote inclusion. Following the speeches, attendees walked down to Park Road and waved handmade signs promoting diversity.  www.crosscharlotte.org
