Last Sunday Pastor Steve Eason from Myers Park Presbyterian Church and Pastor Larry James from Grier Heights Presbyterian Church switched places as part of the Xchange Sermons program. While both churches are Presbyterian, their congregations could not be more different.
Myers Park Presbyterian has several outreach programs in the Grier Heights community. The two churches have crossed paths before, but this is the first time they have ever swapped pulpits.
“When God reigns, God pours,” was a main message of James’ sermon.
“When God rules your life, you can’t even begin to imagine how much God pours into your life,” James said. “Something tells me that if your give up your own self-indulgent ways and attitudes, God will fill up your coffers and God will give you something back.”
“When you give it becomes a contagion,” he said. “Make sure you’re making someone happy every day of your life. Put a smile on someone’s face every day.”
James encouraged the congregation to give all of themselves to God and to allow God to give them all of Himself.
Myers Park member Myra Harris said the sermon James delivered was “fabulous.”
“It was such a different change for us,” she added. Her husband, Buck Harris, said it was “very inspiring.”
Eason preached about repentance. He used the analogy of listening to a GPS “recalculate” directions. He mused that if Jesus had a GPS, he would have used it to teach a lesson.
“Well, the truth would be that all of us get lost from time to time. The truth would be that all of us need to recalculate our lives from time to time,” he said. He talked about the importance of listening to his GPS and listening to the voice of God. Eason pointed out that sometimes we ignore the voice of God, thinking that we know better. Just like we’ll ignore the GPS, thinking that we know a faster route.
“When you make the wrong turn, you get the wrong results…our American history tells us that when you make the wrong turn, you get the wrong results. We’ve done it racially, we’ve done it politically, we’ve done it economically, we’ve done it every which way...” Eason explained. “When we take the wrong turn, we get the wrong results and you would think from history we would learn from our lessons, but we keep defying the voice of God within us.”
Michelle Massey, a member of Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, found Eason’s sermon to be thought provoking. “I enjoyed him very much,” she said. “I look forward to him coming again.”
