The Charlotte Literary Festival returned to NoDa this year drawing people back to the arts district while highlighting the city’s literary and musical talents.
The annual festival spanned two days and provided activities in the parking lot behind the Neighborhood Theater as well as in venues throughout the neighborhood.
In it’s four-year history the festival has been in NoDa and uptown. Organizer Jaz Vincent, owner of RealEyes Bookstore, said his goal for the festival was to unite the community through the arts.
Area gospel groups performed and local artists and vendors hawked their products. Chris Gardner, author of “The Pursuit of Happyness,” was a featured speaker. Michael Bernard Beckwith, featured in the self-help book “The Secret” also spoke.
Attendance was sparse on both days, especially at the workshops, some of which charged admission. The festival also included a carnival with rides and kids’ activities. Vincent said by bringing various arts, providing workshops and kids’ programs, he hoped to attract readers and non-readers to the event.
“It’s beautiful energy,” Vincent said.
Festival newcomer Christine Thompson agreed.
She brought her husband James because he told her he wanted to write a book – much to her surprise. Along with giving her husband an opportunity meet authors, the festival was a chance to meet new people and explore the North Davidson Arts District.
The Thompsons live in South Charlotte, and had never been to NoDa. Thompson said she works in Uptown and has been to the University area. She likes exploring different parts of the city.
“It’s important just to get together with people and fellowship and know what’s going on out there and expand your horizons,” Thompson said.
